Freitagsnachrichten

Schluck.

obesity

The New Yorker has an elegant and informative article on American obesity that synthesizes the insights of several new books on the topic (including an anthology in the field of "fat studies").

According to one researcher, obesity has everything to do with our changed environment: “We evolved on the savannahs of Africa. “We now live in Candyland.”

While that circumstance is incontestable, I find myself more intrigued with the following account by the author of Mindless Eating, who conducted numerous experiments only to conclude: "“Give them a lot and they eat a lot.” This laconic statement nicely encapsulates both human beings' unreflected eating habits as well as corporate complicity if not responsibility.

Looks like in the age of supersized everything the only solution can be individual ... downsizing.
